7T Core Structure

COBIC_1187

The 7-Tesla MRI Core Facility team at CoBIC consists of MRI physicists and medical technologists and serves as the central point of contact for the operation, further development, and scientific use of the 7-Tesla MRI scanner.

The team’s core responsibilities include maintaining the scanner, conducting regular quality control checks, organizing technical maintenance work, and communicating with manufacturers of stimulation, peripheral, and MRI devices in the event of malfunctions. In addition, the team maintains the scanner log and provides safety briefings and training for users.

A particular focus is on supporting researchers at CoBIC in the planning, preparation, and execution of their 7-Tesla projects.

This includes, in particular, the setup, adaptation, and optimization of MR protocols and available sequences in accordance with scientific requirements and the individual needs of users. In addition, the 7T team supports multicenter studies and is committed to making current methodological developments and innovative approaches from other ultra-high-field sites accessible to local users.
In addition to these service- and application-oriented tasks, the MR Core Facility also conducts its own research activities in the fields of MR imaging and MR spectroscopy.

The focus is on the development of new imaging techniques and analytical tools. Current research priorities include, among other things, novel approaches to visualizing brain anatomy, cerebral vasculature, and perfusion.

Methods

High-field neuroimaging at 7T and 3T:

  • Structural, perfusion, and functional MRI
  • Quantitative MRI of vascularization, microstructure, myelination, and iron
  • Resting-state and task-based fMRI; advanced 7T/3T sequences and analysis pipelines

Dimo Ivanov is a physicist specializing in high-field MRI and quantitative neuroimaging. He obtained his PhD in Physics in 2012 at the University of Leipzig / Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences. After postdoctoral work at Maastricht University (2012-2017) and an Assistant Professorship there from 2017, he became Independent Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics and Head of the 7 Tesla MR Core structure at CoBIC in 2025. His work spans structural, perfusion, functional, and quantitative MRI across 7T and 3T systems.
